Mental Math is an engaging educational game called Math Balance that offers a delightful way for children to enhance their skills while having fun. The game challenges players to help Toby navigate through bridges by achieving balance. In doing so, they not only learn about equality and comparison but also develop essential skills for algebraic understanding.

Designed for teachers and parents who prefer upfront paid apps to in-app purchases, Mental Math School offers a convenient solution for family sharing as in-app purchases are not supported. With 30 levels, this mental math game encourages children to develop fluency with numbers. They will discover concepts such as the flexibility of addition (as order does not affect the result) and the possibility of different numbers adding up to the same sum. Furthermore, they will employ various number strategies such as bridging and compensation to accelerate their mental math computations.

The Math Balance game covers a wide range of skills, including:

  • Developing an understanding of the equal sign and using greater than and less than sign
  • Representing numbers in expanded form
  • Utilizing the commutative property of addition as a strategy, along with expanded form (e.g., 67+25 = 60+7+20+5 = 80+12 =92)
  • Applying missing addend strategies (x+b=c) in various scenarios where the difference is unknown, involving bigger or smaller unknowns, and solving one-step problems
  • Demonstrating that addition and subtraction are inverse operations (e.g., 4+5=9, 9-5=4)
  • Using only doubles or even/odd numbers to attain a given total
  • Solving one-step word problems involving change unknown, result unknown, and start unknown
  • Performing addition of two-digit numbers (up to four numbers) using place value strategies and properties of operations (e.g., 43 + 34 + 57 + 24 = __)
  • Representing addition and subtraction using concrete models
  • Mentally adding or subtracting 10 or 100 from a given number within the range of 100–900
  • Developing fluency in adding and subtracting within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction
  • Understanding multiplication as repeated addition

For those adhering to the Core curriculum, Math Balance aligns with the following core standards: 2.OA.B.2, 2.NBT.4, 2.OA.2, 1.OA.6, 2.OA.C.3, 2.OA.1, 2.NBT.6, 2.NBT.7, 2.NBT.8, 3.NBT.2.
